Pooch and Mutt's expert trainer, Jon, is here to take us through what clicker training is and how to use it whilst puppy training.
Puppy training can look different for every pawrent. The main aim is to set your puppy up for life - preparing them to be their best doggy selves. Some opt to use clickers during their training, but for beginners, it can be hard to know the most effective way to use it.
What you should know about clicker training for puppies
- If your puppy has a good food drive, clicker training is great way to channel that effectively into training.
- Clicker training allows us to MARK an exact behaviour we want from our puppy at the exact moment they do it, and for them to understand a reward is on its way.
- The best way to start training your dog with the clicker is to identify positive behaviour your dog does regularly.
- To begin getting your puppy used to the clicker, and let them know that a reward shortly follows, wait for your puppy to look at you organically. Press the clicker and give them a treat. This will help gain their focus.
- Your puppy is going to be more engaged with you now, and initially they won’t understand the process, but dogs are problem solvers, so keep going and your puppy will work it out!
- Once your puppy picks this up, you can elevate the training. Your puppy should now make a conscious effort to shift their focus to you to be rewarded with a treat.
- When they understand what they need to do, add a command to this action. This can be their name, or 'me'.
- Once they've cracked this, this sets a good foundation to the rest of your clicker training as they now associate the clicker with the correct behaviour and a reward.
