One of the most common reasons for a visit to the vet is the ‘itchy dog’. For many owners, itching and skin disease is an ongoing problem that they struggle to manage. Similarly, dogs with ongoing stomach issues, including vomiting and diarrhoea are also common problems which are hugely frustrating for owner and dog alike.
In both scenarios, food allergies could be at play. Food allergies are common and not always easily diagnosed. While their symptoms are tricky to manage at times, avoiding food allergens does not have to be complicated.
When a dog has a food allergy or intolerance, the most important things is to get them onto the right diet. The aim of a sensitivity diet is to reduce the frequency and severity of the dog’s signs, whether they be dermatological, gastrointestinal or both.

Most dogs with food allergies would respond positively to this diet, due to the novel protein source and limited number of ingredients.
Many hypoallergenic foods are grain free, as grain is a trigger for many dogs however there are some veterinary diets on the market that are not. This would include common ingredients such as maize, oats, rice, wheat and barley. For dogs with a grain allergy or sensitivity, it is vital they are fed a completely grain free diet. Otherwise, they can be prone to ongoing issues affecting both their gastrointestinal health and their skin. Grains do not form a natural part of the canine diet and as a result, many dogs struggle to digest grains. Intolerance to grains can manifest in many ways such as digestive discomfort, itchy skin and sub-optimal health.
Frustratingly, even on the right diet, symptoms won’t go away overnight. It can take a good 8 weeks for us to notice improvement. It is also important to remember that secondary issues such as skin infections, will need specific treatment before signs improve.
Absolutely, the high levels of fatty acids help to form a strong skin barrier which locks moisture inside and protects the body from external allergens.
For many dogs, ongoing loose stool and vomiting will be linked to food sensitivities and allergies. In these cases, pets should see a big improvement when on this diet.
This diet is not recommended for puppies less than 12 weeks of age and should only be fed to a puppy after 12 weeks old if a vet has recommended a similar prescription diet after diagnosis. Dogs with known allergies to any of the ingredients (e.g. salmon, peas or buckwheat) should not eat this diet.
